Roll clothes, don’t fold them.

Scott Allan spent the summer after his graduation from college backpacking across Europe and swears by rolling clothes.

“I fit a months worth of clothes into my pack,” he said.

Even if you’re just going for a weekend trip, why not compress your suitcase into an overnight bag for added ease? Taking a carry on rather than checking luggage at the airport or finding a place for a suitcase on a train makes the trip even easier.

The 3-1-1 rule.

“All liquids brought on planes must be in 3.4-ounce bottles or smaller and inside a single, clear, quart-size zip-top bag,” according to Transportation Security Administration rules.

In addition to liquids like shampoo and conditioner, foods like peanut buter and puding are classified as gels, as well as mascara and lip gloss. Check the TSA blog for a complete list of what you can and cannot bring on planes.

Wear your bulkiest items.

This seems like a no brainer, but if you wear the one jacket you’re bringing for a weekend away, it’s one less thing you’ll have to fit into your suitcase!

Make a packing list.

Create a checklist for what to bring on vacation to make sure you don’t forget anything down to your sunscreen. An added bonus would be making outfits, either by pen and paper or photo proof - as in Clueless - to make sure you don’t bring anything you won’t wear.

Pack with a formula.

Pack three tops for every bottom, says Justin Klosky, founder of the Los Angeles based organizational-consulting company O.C.D. Experience on realsimple.com. His weeklong trip prediction wouldn’t require more than six tops, one pair of pants, one pair of shorts, one dress and three bras.

Double duty clothes.

Bring along clothes you can use for day and night. A dark pair of jeans can be worn for a day trip exploring wherever you stay, and with a different top or added scarf, becomes the base for an outfit for a nice dinner.

We show you how to take your clothes from day to night!
